Frequently Asked Questions

Are they selling Georgetown’s water?

No. Georgetown is not selling its water or water rights. This proposal only transfers service areas that are outside the city limits.

Will this affect my water service?

If you live in Georgetown city limits – no changes. Those living outside of Georgetown city limits will still have regular access to water, but it just won’t be serviced by the City of Georgetown anymore.

What happens to customers outside the city?

They will be served by new providers, and Georgetown will continue supplying water during the transition.

Why does Georgetown serve areas outside the city?

In 2014, Georgetown acquired a large rural water system, which significantly expanded its service area beyond city limits. As a result, the City is legally required to provide water to those areas, even though it does not control growth or development there.

Will this raise water rates?

The goal is the opposite. By reducing the need for future water supply and infrastructure, this measure is expected to save hundreds of millions of dollars over time, helping stabilize water rates for Georgetown residents.

Will anyone lose water service?

No. Every customer will continue to receive water service.
